A Colorado vacation doesn’t have to break the bank, even if you want a jam-packed itinerary. There are lots of free things to see and do in Summit County, from the Village at Breckenridge to the historic Hoosier Pass. Here are some suggestions from the vacation experts at Ski Colorado Rentals.

Free Activities in Breckenridge, Colorado

The Village at Breckenridge is well-known for its skiing, but are you aware of all the other things to do in Breck?

Biking

There’s a biking path that connects Breckenridge to Frisco, CO, and you can enjoy it at no cost to you. It’s less than 10 miles one way, and it’s road-bike friendly. AllTrails.com is a great resource for monitoring the condition of this paved bike trail in Breckenridge.

Breckenridge Welcome Center Museum

In downtown Breck, you’ll find the Welcome Center, near the Blue River Plaza. It’s not just a spot for getting directions; the Welcome Center also houses an interpretive museum. Here’s a taste of the free exhibits you’ll find there:

  • 19th Century Log Cabin: This was found hidden between additions when the Welcome Center was being built.
  • Historic Displays: Since Breck is a historic mining town, there are interactive media displays chronicling both Native Americans, miners, and the town’s ski history.
  • Cucumber Gulch Wildlife Preserve: Learn more about the 77-acre reserve located about one mile from Main St in Breckenridge.
  • Time is a River: This exhibit shares an interactive timeline of Breckenridge’s history, dating back to the formation of the Rocky Mountains in which the town is nestled.

The Breckenridge Welcome Center is also a great place to book additional experiences in town, such as historic tours or a gondola ride.

Breckenridge Kayak Park

Think of this as an adventure course designed solely for kayaking. Located on the Blue River in Breck, Kayak Park covers 1,800 feet and boasts 15 different water features for kayakers to experience.

Kayak Park is seasonal and was built with the help of the great Outdoors Colorado Grant, making it free to visitors. It’s popular from May through August, and wet suits are recommended due to the water temperatures. The man-made kayak challenges range in skill level from beginner to advanced, and you can bring your own kayak and gear or rent from the nearby shops in Breck.

  • KODI Rafting
  • Breckenridge Whitewater
  • Blue River Sports Ski & Snowboard Rental
  • Christy Sports Lone Star

Boreas or Hoosier Pass

No matter how much you love the great outdoors, sometimes a scenic drive just hits the spot. Enjoy the fresh air through the windows and drink in the vistas of the Boreas or Hoosier Passes in Colorado.

Boreas Pass

This is a road that runs from Breckenridge to Como, located about 20 miles south in Park County. You can navigate the partially paved pass in about an hour, but with less to do in Como than in Breck, you might find yourself turning right around and heading back.

Along the road, you’ll be greeted by towering Aspen trees, as well as historic railroad sites, the Rocky Mountains, and ski areas.

Boreas Pass crosses the Continental Divide, as well as the Blue and South Platte Rivers. Since part of Boreas pass is unpaved road, be aware that it closes in the winter, and may be impassable during inclement weather.

Hoosier Pass

Hoosier Pass connects Breckenridge and Alma, Colorado. Like the Boreas Pass, it straddles the Continental Divide. This road is paved, but steep inclines may make it impassable during the winter months.

In addition to being a beautiful drive that offers views of the Mosquito mountains and Mt Lincoln, Hoosier is an alternate route from Breck to Denver.
